eKT 25 - Winemaker of the Year nomination

Posted by Kerri on August 16 2017 in: Churinga Vineyard: Peglidis Vineyard: Riesling: Specials & New Release Wines: Stockists: Viticulture: Wine Education

G’day folks…

Late last year in Melbourne I was lucky enough to be sitting next to winemaker Mike Symons from Stonier in the Mornington Peninsula tasting through their delicious new single vineyard releases and talking about what makes the sites so special for him. Over more recent time I’ve been enjoying watching Adelaide Hills winemaker Taras Ochota spruiking the virtues of South Australia (in his capacity as one of the faces for Tasting Australia 17) at events held in Adelaide and my partner Tim has recently told me about this fantastic Tempranillo he tasted from West Cape Howe made by winemaker Gavin Berry… why am I talking about these guys you might be asking?!..

Well we’ve all just been nominated as finalists for the Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine Winemaker of the year awards for 2017, in their 20th anniversary year. To have anyone tell you they enjoy your work is a special thing but to be nominated in such inspiring company is really exciting for me. Our stories are featured in the current edition of the magazine.
Proudly, this is the second time in my career that I’ve been nominated for this award. The first was during my time managing Leasingham Wines back in 2003.

These pats on the back are always welcome and especially so after such a long 2017 harvest where stamina and dedication was so important. The wet and cooler January conditions meant our harvest was a little later and certainly longer than we’ve been experiencing over the last ten years. For the first time we harvested both Peglidis and Churinga Riesling over the course of weeks as opposed to a few days.
My poor Italian friend and vintage helper Peppe Randazzo (all the way out from Sicily in mid February) who was keen to hit the ground running had many more hours for tank cleaning and drinking coffee. Our stainless steel tanks have never been so shiny!

This year with even more selective hand picking in the vineyard to eliminate any botrytis and really gentle pressing in the winery we’ve created some gorgeous Riesling and I’m very happy with the results. The single vineyard Peglidis and Churinga Rieslings are as strong as ever. Despite all of this, due to the more selective picking I’ve decided that I won’t be releasing a 2017 Melva. For all of the Melva fans out there please make sure you buy the last of the 2016 before it soon sells out.

Awards and nominations are wonderful but really are nothing without the support and expertise of my grape growers so my congratulations and thanks goes to my friends Bunny and Yvonne Peglidis and the Kyros family - Dean and Bill, with Churinga manager Leon Schramm for their ongoing dedication and hard work. I’m also grateful to my new growers of Vermentino Anthony and Chris Koerner. How lovely it is to work with passionate people.

Regardless of the outcome of the Winemaker of the Year, I’m so chuffed and I’ll be looking forward to celebrating with the other nominees and past winners, enjoying the fruits of our labour in September when the awards ceremony takes place.
To celebrate I’m offering mailing list customers the opportunity to purchase some Winter wine specials including a special single vineyard six pack celebrating my growers. The order form attached can be obtained by emailing me your details (kt@winesbykt.com) and joining the wine club... and with free delivery across the country your cellar stocking for the last of these chilly Winter nights just got easier....

Don't forget my cellar door will be open every weekend during Spring and leading up to Christmas.
Drop in and see me sometime.. Cheers, KT x
